[INSIGHT]SOCCERBEE Data Insight - TOP SPEED

22 Dec 2025

Is the top speed you hit in one match really your true top speed?

When we talk about “fast players,” names like Kylian Mbappé, Achraf Hakimi, and Jérémy Doku probably come to mind. You’ve likely seen headlines such as “Reached 36 km/h in a match!” across various media outlets.

Professional players’ top speeds are typically measured using GPS devices provided by their clubs or optical tracking systems operated by leagues and tournament organizers.

However, for players not using team GPS systems especially elite youth players preparing for professional careers, it’s difficult to know their true Top Speed (km/h).

They lack objective “evidence” to confirm whether they’re faster than their peers, relying instead on instinct or perception rather than data.

That’s why SOCCERBEE, the personal GPS tracker, provides individual Top Speed analysis for players enabling them to measure and understand their own data. But rather than judging your speed from a single match, let’s explore how to properly interpret the Top Speed metric.

What Is Top Speed?

Top Speed refers to the maximum velocity sustained for at least one second during a running action in a match.

SOCCERBEE provides benchmark ranges based on player position and performance level.

These levels are divided into three categories:

  • Amateur – Recreational or casual players who enjoy football.
  • Professional – Average physical data typically recorded in pro-level matches.
  • Elite – Top-tier professionals with exceptional physical performance.

This categorization applies across all positions.

In the past, sprinting ability was mainly required from wide players, full-backs and wingers. But as football has evolved, positional boundaries have become more fluid:

  • Full-backs move into midfield,
  • Strikers drop deep,
  • Midfielders cover defensive lines.

Today, regardless of position, players are expected to possess the physical capability to perform multiple tactical roles.

As the data shows, players across all positions can achieve high top speeds and these are not just “fast” players, but also technically and tactically outstanding ones.

What Insights Can Top Speed Data Provide?

1️⃣ Tactical Decision Making and Positional Advantage

Players with higher Top Speeds can reach spaces  faster and farther within the same 1–2 seconds beating defenders to critical zones and receiving passes behind the defensive line.

This forces defenders to drop deeper, opening up more midfield space for attacking play.

Recent research also found that for every 1 km/h increase in Top Speed before a shot, a player’s xG (expected goal value) increases by 0.05–0.07.

2️⃣ Injury Risk Monitoring and Load Management

When a player’s Top Speed exposure drops significantly compared to match levels, the risk of muscle or hamstring injuries increases.

That’s why professional physical coaches often design training sessions to ensure players reach a certain percentage of their average Top Speed in practice, keeping them match-ready and injury-resistant.

Why You Should Track Top Speed Across Multiple Matches

Just like other metrics, Top Speed shouldn’t be judged based on a single game.

① Match context varies.

Defensive game plans, positions, opponents, or even weather conditions can limit opportunities to reach top velocity. That’s why it’s recommended to review average data across 5–10 matches.

② Growth, fatigue, and condition affect your speed.

Weight changes, hamstring fatigue, match rhythm, or for youth players physical growth can all influence your top-end performance.

③ Self-management through perceived condition.

Ideally, you’d always perform in top condition but factors like diet, sleep, overtraining, recovery, and injuries can cause fluctuations. Compare your Top Speed data from matches where you felt great vs. when you didn’t. If your maximum speed drops during poor physical condition, reflect on why and adjust your preparation or recovery accordingly. Tracking these patterns helps you identify trends and take control of your performance.
